DIY Play Kitchen

I read play kitchens were good for two-year-olds. I did not want to just buy a toy kitchen. I had seen a Pinterest post where people had made kitchens from old furniture. I live in an area where the trash company will pick up basically anything you put out. I started looking around on trash day for a piece I could make into a kitchen.

A nightstand was put out that was a missing drawer. I did not need a drawer so that was fine! It does not matter what piece you find you can make it work.

I wanted my kitchen to have a sink area, stovetop, and oven.

I do not know if you know this, but Lowe’s and Home Depot sell messed up paint. You can buy little jars of paint for $0.50 at Home Depot!

I found this perfect 50’s shade of mint green in the Home Depot mess-ups for $2. I painted the stovetop also using home depot mess up paints.

My husband cut a piece of wood we had leftover from another project to the right size to make a backdrop for the kitchen to hold utensils and such.

My kids make little clocks at Home Depot first Saturday projects on time and I screwed that it.

I hope you see how random my designs are and that anything you come up with will be awesome.

Materials Needed

  • An old piece of furniture
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Hinges if your piece does not already have a door
  • Extra wood for oven door if your piece does not already have a door.
  • Random parts for a sink, faucet, stovetop knobs, etc.

Step 1

Find a piece of furniture

Step 2

Clean it up

Step 3

Cut a piece of wood to be the oven door.

Step 3

Paint it a kitcheny color

(If cutting a hole for a sink do that before painting)

Step 4

Screw-in a bowl for a sink if you are not cutting one.

Step 5

Add a handle to the oven door

Step 6

Add hinges to the oven door

Step 7

Paint on the stovetop burners

As you can see I did not cut the bowl for the sink before paint, so I had to go back and paint again.

Step 8

Add stovetop turners (dresser knobs)

Add whatever else you think your kiddos would love.

The dollar tree has little shopping baskets with fake food. They also have small pots, pans, and utensils.

I got the little metals pots at IKEA they are adorable and are basically real pots and pans just small versions. IKEA also has felt food in the same section.

Your kids will enjoy playing in their kitchen. They will see that you worked hard to make something for them. It will be a beautiful addition to your house that you will probably want to keep for the grandkids.
