DIY skirt to overall romper

This skirt grabbed my attention instantly. The pattern is really stunning. It had a previous owner and I believe it was made in the U.S.A. That usually means it is older. I do not completely remember my motivations for turning into a romper, but I know I like rompers. This was a quick DIY skirt to romper. All of my projects have to be quick. I don’t have a craft room and I have four children.
Isn’t it pretty?
I don’t do patterns. They do not like me and they require too much reading. I enjoy reading books, but not directions. To decide how high the crotch part of the romper should be, I laid on it and marked it with a pencil. I am not a perfectionist by any means, if there is a word for the opposite, that’s me.

This is how I cut the crotch. I now know this is not the correct way to do it. You should fold it in half. Take a pair of pants you have and fold them in half. Put the pants on top of the skirt and trace the curvature of the inseam. You will want to cut about an inch out from the line you made for your seam.

So, I did this wrong. Luckily there is so much fabric you cannot really tell.

These were the pieces I cut from the skirt. At some point, I decided to use these to make the pants into overalls.

Since I had four triangular pieces I sewed two of the pieces together around the edges. I left an opening to flip them “right-side” out.

After the triangles had clean, stitched edges, I attached them to the pants. You may notice that the triangles are not big enough to reach around the neck. I took about 4 inches of lace and created a connector. The buttons are sewn onto the triangles. The connector has two hoops to go over the buttons.

This DIY overall romper is so comfortable and keeps me cool on a hot day.
