DIY Piñata Cake

There was this really fun Youtube personality that I was watching called Nerdy Nummies and she made an Inside Out piñata cake. I thought it was a really fun idea and did not seem too complicated. Many times, I have used this Wilson cake pan that can be made into any letter or number. I wanted to combine the ideas and make a piñata cake in the form of a six. I hope you are inspired to DIY a piñata cake.

You can make a piñata cake in many different shapes. You just need to have two parts. The first layer (or several) will have a hole in it to hold the candy. As you can see, I only had two layers.

The top layer will be solid to hide the part with the candy.

Next, put icing around the top edges of the piñata cake to hold the layers together.

I wanted the cake to look like one of those melted crayon pictures. I started with just plain white frosting.

To do the melted crayon effect I melted the icing and put it in 6 different cups. I added food coloring to each cup. Starting in the center, I poured a quick line. Next, I did all the lines of the same color at once. Lastly, since the cake was filled with candy I did not have the normal hole that a six would have. The sprinkles were used to make it look like a 6.

He was pretty excited about his pinata cake.

I was a little nervous since I was not sure what would happen. The candy didn’t spill out so I think if you wanted the candy to roll out you would want to build a taller cake and use round candies like the inspiration video.

The kids really enjoyed it. They thought it was fun that there were m&ms inside.
